Easley Union Baptist Church had its beginnings in prayer services and back-yard get-togethers. A small group organized, as much out of religious fervor as the enjoyment of family recreation. By the late 1880's this group had sacrificed enough money to seek out a building for worship services. During this period, Rev. Elie Earl came to Easley to work with the local railroad company. His ideas coincided with this faithful group's desire for a house of worship-together they formally organized Easley Union. An old building and a small lot was purchased where the present Mayfair (Old Glenwood) Mill stands as the first church property. In 1900 Easley Union purchased land from W. M. Haygood on Runion Street where the present parking area is today. Among the charter members of the church were King Williams, Gus Clark, Jim Barton, Word Hendrix Luke Evans, Beddy Orr, Berry Hunt, Jack Ellis, Henry Byrd and Pink Mansell. There have been numerous pastors over the past century. Our present pastor Rev. Curtis L. Cruell became pastor in November of 1974. Church growth meant that more land was needed for expansion. On April 20, 1920 a second parcel of land was purchased followed by more in May of 1964. In 1969, under the leadership of Rev. C. C. Stewart, Sr. an additional plot was purchased which provided space for the present sanctuary. The present sanctuary was erected and was dedicated on August 27, 1978. Easley Union has continued to expand along with the community. Though Faith, Persistence and Patience it has become a driving force in the Easley community. |
